February’s Message from General Manager Bob Dowdy
This month is all about the color RED. Did you know that February is American Heart Health Month? Even though it may not always be our primary goal; a healthy heart can be a great side effect of all of those hours on a treadmill or struggling through one of our group exercise classes. I see those red faces as you make your way down the stairs!
Friday, February 3 is the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day. I encourage everyone to show their awareness by working out in red on that day. Eating red is another way that we can improve our overall health. While many studies have recommended cutting back on consumption of red meat, there are lots of ‘red’ foods that health and nutrition experts say will protect our hearts. A recent study from the University of Michigan revealed that cherry-enriched diets in animals lowered total blood cholesterol levels and reduced triglycerides (fatty acids), major risk factors for heart disease. Americans are being encouraged to discover the power of eating heart-healthy red foods during the first-ever National Eat Red Week, February 4 -10.
That brings us to the most important RED event of all – VALENTINE’S DAY! First of all, forgetting Valentine’s Day could be very detrimental to your health. However, affection between partners, parents and children, or even close friends can increase levels of the hormone Oxytocin. Oxytocin makes us feel good when we’re close to family and other loved ones, including pets. Oxytocin does more than make us feel good. It lowers the levels of stress hormones in the body, reducing blood pressure, and improving mood. We will be hosting our first Parent’s Night Out event on Friday, February 10 for parents that would like a well-deserved date night. Please see Customer Service Manager Stephanie Hagemann for more information. Also, check out our special, complimentary “My Sweaty Valentine” partner Yoga classes on Monday, February 13 and Tuesday, February 14.
