Fitness Formula Clubs Encourages Regular Exercise As Line Of Defense Against COVID-19

(Chicago, Illinois) – Fitness Formula Clubs (FFC) has been a health and fitness hub for Chicagoans for more than 36 years. After reopening in July with new safety and sanitation procedures in place, FFC is encouraging members to return to a regular exercise routine as a line of defense against COVID-19.

The health benefits of exercise extend beyond well-known advantages like weight management and stress relief. Data from a growing number of studies now suggests that the recommended 30-60 minutes of exercise per day can boost immune function, the body’s response to vaccines like the flu shot, and the body’s defenses against viruses like COVID-19.

Francesca Schuler, CEO of California-based company InShape, recently interviewed Dr. David Nieman, Biology professor at Appalachian State University and director of the Human Performance Lab at the North Carolina Research Campus, about his studies on the effects of exercise on the immune system. In the interview, Nieman explains how regular exercise releases fighter cells that support a strong immune system.

“The immune system needs exercise to do its job better…it’s the most important thing we can be doing during this pandemic,” Nieman said.

According to Nieman’s studies, exercising 30-60 minutes per day is optimal for boosting immune function and can knock the number of days you are sick with an infection like COVID-19 in half. On the other end of the spectrum, inactive and overweight individuals may have a harder time recovering from a strong viral infection.

“There is a brand new study out showing that during the pandemic, if [people] are obese and unfit and not exercising, they have a 4-fold increased risk of a severe case of COVID-19,” Nieman said.

To make matters worse, new studies are emerging that show a vaccine for COVID-19 may be less effective for the obese population.

When deciding whether to return to a health club for a workout, keep in mind that research from 2,877 health club and gym locations collected by MXMetrics shows that in over 49.4 million check-ins, the ratio of check-ins to COVID cases is 42,731:1 or just 0.002%.

“The benefit of keeping your immune system in good fighting shape for this virus is so important…that if there is any perceived little bit of risk in allowing people to exercise in a gym, I think the risk is so small relative to the huge benefit,” Nieman said.

FFC Reopens Its Facilities As City and State Enter Phase IV

(Chicago, Illinois) July 2, 2020 – Chicagoland-based Fitness Formula Clubs (FFC) reopens its doors after more than three months of government-mandated closure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight of FFC’s 11 locations welcomed members back to its facilities on July 1 with new safety and sanitation procedures in place to maintain a safe and clean environment for both members and staff. The balance of our reopening schedule is listed at ffc.com.

Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley, Park Ridge Mayor Marty Maloney and Oak Park Mayor Anan Abu-Taleb toured the club facilities in their towns on Thursday, July 1, 2020, while FFC employees work hard to clean workout equipment after each member’s use.

Following all State of Illinois (suburban locations) or City of Chicago (city locations) issued guidelines for health and fitness clubs, FFC is operating with limited capacity and shortened hours to allow for increased cleaning time. Additional safety measures include temperature checks for all members and staff upon arrival, in-club signage and floor decals to promote social distancing and reservations for services like indoor lap swimming and group fitness classes.

In addition to an increased number of hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipe stations throughout the clubs, FFC has invested in new technology systems to ensure the clubs remain as clean as possible:

  • FFC has installed airPHX technology in each of its clubs, which provides 24 hour coverage against bacteria and viruses by generating sanitizing air.
  • To properly sanitize yoga mats, FFC now uses the Matsana yoga mat disinfection system, the only UV light technology that safely and effectively eliminates surface bacteria and viruses.
  • For the cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces, FFC facilities now use the Tersano Stabilized Aqueous Ozone (SAO) system. Members receive a personal spray bottle of this multi-surface, multi-functional cleaner upon entry at the clubs to wipe down any used equipment. As part of the new FitSafe guidelines, FFC staff will provide a secondary round of SAO disinfection on any used equipment.

“The health and safety of our members and staff is our number one priority as we reopen our clubs,” said Gale Landers, Founder and CEO of Fitness Formula Clubs. “Our leadership team and club staff have worked tirelessly to establish and execute safety and cleaning processes and procedures in our clubs that not only exceed member expectations but the CDC recommended levels of cleaning and sanitation. We have prepared, we have trained, and we are fully ready to welcome members back to our clubs, safely!”

Fitness Formula Clubs Oak Park Awarded 2020 Outstanding Community Service Award by IHRSA

(Chicago, Illinois) – Chicagoland-based Fitness Formula Clubs (FFC) is dedicated to making a lasting impact on the local communities it serves across its 11 locations, eight within Chicago city limits and three in the nearby suburbs. FFC Oak Park has been recognized for its commitment to its community by International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) as the recipient of the 2020 Outstanding Community Service Award.

According to IHRSA’s website, the Outstanding Community Service Award is presented to “an IHRSA member that has made a long-standing commitment to making a difference in, and beyond, their community.” FFC Oak Park, located in the heart of downtown Oak Park, IL, has been serving the Oak Park/River Forest community since its opening in 2007. From sponsoring and hosting local events, to community and nutrition outreach, to in-kind donations, FFC Oak Park’s devotion to its community extends far beyond its membership base.

“We are honored to receive the 2020 IHRSA Outstanding Community Service Award,” said Jeff Long, FFC Regional Director of Operations. “FFC makes a commitment, even before we open our doors, by partnering with organizations that have a long-standing positive impact in the communities we serve. We are truly humbled by the recognition.”

FFC Oak Park’s longest-standing community partnership is with the The Good Life Race, one of the longest-running races in Oak Park. For 13 years, FFC Oak Park has been involved as a gold level sponsor in this popular 5k race, which donates all proceeds from the event to the Collaboration for Early Childhood and the OPRF Food Pantry.

Another valuable community partnership cultivated by FFC Oak Park is with the Oak Park/River Forest (OPRF) Chamber of Commerce. FFC Oak Park has been involved as an exhibitor in the OPRF Chamber Health & Wellness Event since its inception in 2014 and took on the role of host in 2019. This free event brings over 1,000 people from the community together to learn about the area’s options for hospitals, senior care, diabetes prevention, mental health services and fitness centers/studios to name a few.

FFC Oak Park has also played a substantial role in educating the community on the importance of proper nutrition through the work of Registered Dietitian and Medical Services Coordinator, Amy Silver. From school nutrition educational seminars, to women’s events, to other local partnerships and blog posts, Amy’s community outreach has helped expand the impact FFC Oak Park is making on the residents of the area.

The Outstanding Community Service Award will be presented at the IHRSA International Convention & Trade Show. This year’s 39th Annual convention will take place March 18 – 21 in San Diego, CA.

Fitness Formula Clubs Celebrates 35 Years; Opens 3rd Suburban Club in Elmhurst, IL – Expands Footprint in Chicagoland Area to 11 Locations

(Chicago, Illinois) – Chicagoland-based Fitness Formula Clubs has much to celebrate this year; 2019 marks the company’s 35th year in business. To kick off the noteworthy mile marker, the company’s newest facility opened in December 2018 – an ultra-convenient 60,000 sq ft club, located in the heart of downtown Elmhurst.

The parent company, Fitness Formula, Ltd., was founded in 1984 by CEO Gale T. Landers and initially developed and managed fitness facilities in the suburbs. In 1994, Landers opened the first city location in the Gold Coast neighborhood (1030 N Clark St), now known as FFC Gold Coast.

“Our Gold Coast location was our first. The construction of the mixed-use building was delayed due to the savings and loan crisis of the early ‘90’s. Eventually the landlord delivered 58,000 square feet of space, but I had to raise enough equity/debt to develop the club,” remembers Landers. “I am so grateful to First Midwest Bank as well as all of our investors who have stood by the company and helped us not only get funded, but expand and grow through the years.”

In the years since, Fitness Formula has opened 10 additional locations:

  • 1997, FFC Old Town, LaSalle & Division
  • 2000, FFC Union Station, Jackson & Canal
  • 2002, FFC Boystown, Halsted & Belmont
  • 2003, FFC East Lakeview, Waveland & Pine Grove
  • 2005, FFC South Loop, Roosevelt & State
  • 2007, FFC Oak Park, Harlem & Lake
  • 2009, FFC Lincoln Park, North & Sheffield
  • 2011, FFC West Loop, Clinton & Monroe
  • 2016, FFC Park Ridge, Touhy & Cumberland
  • 2018, FFC Elmhurst, Addison & 1st
  • FFC has long-utilized a tried-and-true hub and spoke strategy when deciding where to open a new location. Each club is located near train, bus, and subway commuter transportation centers. Eight fall within the Chicago city limits; three are located in the near Chicagoland suburbs.

The two latest editions, FFC Park Ridge and FFC Elmhurst, are free-standing facilities, built from the ground up, where the company also owns the land. Landers explains, “It’s allowed us the freedom to design and bring to life a specific vision. For example, FFC Elmhurst is uniquely designed with the member experience in mind. We’ve implemented 3 new community-focused features at this location: an outdoor walkout patio area adjacent to our street-level cafe, an outdoor turfed area on the third floor next to the outdoor pool, and a club lounge & bar oasis.”

While these latest projects are impressive oases and recreational gathering spaces, the member experience is what differentiates the brand for fitness lovers at all the FFC locations. Their relentless pursuit to exceed member expectations and employ the friendliest, most-qualified and engaged staff is fundamental to its DNA.

“If you aren’t providing a superior experience for your members, they aren’t going to stick around, especially in a highly competitive market,” Landers said. “Our staff, and the unique services we provide, are truly the difference-makers for the company. I am so thankful for our entire team, and of course, our tens of thousands of members across Chicagoland. We wouldn’t be where we are today without them!”

To show that appreciation, FFC will be hosting a number of events dedicated to the members, which will include elements of fitness demos, food and beverage samples, giveaways, games, social gatherings, entertainment and more. Events are also open to the public – the more the merrier! More information can be found here.
