With the phased reopening plans set by the city and the state, many of you have reached out with two main questions:

  1. Will FFC reopen in some capacity on May 29, or in "Phase 3"?
  2. When you do reopen, what safety and cleaning protocols will be in place?

Will FFC Reopen in Some Capacity on May 29, or in "Phase 3"?

Unfortunately, it is not economically feasible for FFC to re-open in “Phase 3” at all as it’s so narrowly defined by the State of Illinois and the City of Chicago.

Since the temporary mandated shutdown began in mid-March, I have been in constant communication with various task forces, consultants, and government officials for the State of Illinois and City of Chicago on establishing an alternate plan to more fully open our facilities at an earlier date to no avail.

At this point, the current guidelines and protocols to reopen our clubs only make it feasible to do so when the state and/or city enters “Phase 4”.

When you do reopen, what safety and cleaning protocols will be in place?

The health and safety of our members and staff is our primary focus. As many of you know, Safety has always been one of our 5 Core Values. Our leadership team has garnered numerous best practices from industry associations and other leading club companies around the globe to create a daily system that will deliver a club environment that will exceed your expectations and CDC recommended levels of sanitation.

To that end, we have developed a comprehensive Re-Launch 2020 Playbook that incorporates and builds on our already high standards of safety and cleanliness. Here are three examples of significant investments we have made to keep all FFC locations as safe and clean as possible:

  • airPHX technology provides 24-hour coverage against bacteria and viruses, generating sanitizing ambient air. airPHX (pronounced “Air-fix”) utilizes OSHA safe levels of gas-phase hydrogen peroxide as its main disinfecting agent. The system is lethal to viruses and bacteria, safe for people, and it operates continuously. Studies have shown that airPHX technology is effective at eliminating COVID-19 on various surfaces, including plastic, metal and flooring.
  • Ozone Technology - FFC facilities now use the Tersano Stabilized Aqueous Ozone (SAO) system for cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces. This cleaning solution is stronger than bleach, but safe for users and effective on all surfaces. The solution is attracted to germs, soils and bacteria and quickly eliminates contaminants, including the approved surrogate for COVID-19. A multi-surface, multi-functional cleaner, staff will use SAO on surfaces throughout our facilities.
  • Ultraviolet Light System Technology - the Matsana yoga and stretching mat disinfection system is the only UV light technology that safely and effectively eliminates surface bacteria and viruses; this system is in place in all FFC mind/body studios. Matsana sanitizes standard yoga mats to a test lab verified standard of 99.99% germ free in 20 seconds. The system is quick, easy and safe to use.

In addition to the above, multiple units of hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes have been added in numerous locations throughout each club. We look forward to communicating more specifics about our operating guidelines and social distancing, in coming communications.

Our collective determination, resolve and teamwork will bring us out of home isolation and ensure that your health, safety and wellness results in a stronger-than-ever FFC community. We will get through this together. Thank you for your continued support. It means the world to us at this time.

Be well,

It’s hard to believe our government mandated temporary shutdown of all FFC locations happened 7 weeks ago. What isn’t so hard to believe is the amazing resiliency you all have shown in the face of these challenging and unprecedented times. We know it has been difficult to change your workout routines, and thousands of you have risen to the challenge by using FFC On Demand and regularly participating in our Facebook live stream workouts. We could not be prouder of your commitment to your health and well being.

Your Health IS Your Wealth

Safeguarding our health is the number one priority for all of us as we abide by the stay-at-home order now through May 30. As active participants in your fitness and wellness journey, you intimately understand that the investment in your well being and your immune system is priceless and the dividends pay off in spades. Staying active is more important now than it ever has been. Your health IS your wealth!

We want to thank the thousands of you who have reached out with kind words of encouragement and gratitude. We also thank the many members that have made financial donations. It is heart-warming during these uncertain times and we are grateful.

When Will FFC Reopen?

Our reopening date is subject to the government’s approval to do so. As of this date, the governor and the mayor have announced that Illinois/Chicago will be under the "stay-at-home" order through May 30. We are currently in contact with the City of Chicago and other local municipalities on establishing reasonable guidelines that encompass appropriate safety and cleaning protocols for the local fitness club industry. Our staff are anxious to get back to serving you and will go through rigorous training on any new safety guidelines and enhanced cleaning protocols.

We will communicate the opening date as soon as we can. In the meantime, keep up those at-home workouts! Every little bit helps to keep you healthier and safer.

No doubt this has been the most challenging couple of weeks in the 36 years we have been in business. It has been full of social distancing, empty streets, and a great deal of uncertainty. We have received many positive messages from our members and these are truly appreciated.

We know it has been difficult to change workout routines. What gives us encouragement is how many thousands of you have been continuing to exercise via our Facebook Live Streams and have taken advantage of FFC On Demand, which we have extended to all members at no charge for 30 days, offering:

  • Over 70 group fitness classes featuring your favorite instructors & workouts featuring many of our popular trainers
  • Nutrition tips and meal plans
  • Unlimited messaging with a nutrition specialist
  • Lifestyle modification including stress release and mindfulness practices
  • This is a great way to cope with the change in your exercise routine during this time of social isolation.

Please check your email for a special Free 30 Day Access To FFC On Demand available to all dues-paying members. If you didn't receive the email, please contact us at ffc.com/contact-us.

Of late, we have received hundreds of messages; mostly centered around two key questions:

  1. Are you reopening April 1?
  2. Will FFC be billing me on April 1?

1. Are you reopening April 1?

We will not be reopening on April 1. As you know, at this point, the state is under a "stay-at-home" order through April 7. Please expect the facilities and services to be unavailable indefinitely until the government has provided permission to re-open. We will be monitoring this ever-evolving landscape based on government guidance so that we can be prepared to re-open our clubs once it is appropriate to do so. Thank you for your understanding and continued patronage.

2. Did FFC bill me on April 1?

  • To be clear - your membership has been put on freeze at no cost as of the day the clubs were temporarily closed. No further action is required. As you have already paid March dues, you will receive a dues credit on your membership account for the period of time that the club is temporarily closed.
  • Your membership dues will not be withdrawn again until your club re-opens. On the day we re-open your club, your membership dues will be charged prorata for the remaining days of the month, and your March membership dues credit will be applied.
  • Although members will not be billed for April membership dues, any non-dues charges, meaning any house account charges, that were billed to your account in March, will be debited against a membership dues credit for the period of time from March 17 – March 31.

For additional information, please read our COVID-19 FAQ here.

We really miss seeing our members and our team every day. While this COVID-19 pandemic is certainly causing feelings of anxiety, we know our FFC community is a powerful one, and we are determined to emerge even stronger once this is behind us. Indeed, we will re-open in celebration.

Thank you for your continued trust and patience, and we look forward to being your partners in fitness and wellness for the next 36 years.

Be Well,

Updated: March 16, 2020

As we continue to navigate through the unique challenges posed by COVID-19, I’d like to share an update on how Fitness Formula Clubs is responding. The safety and health of the FFC Community - members and staff alike – is our number one priority. As you are aware, we have been taking additional proactive steps for the last several days.

In further effort to safeguard our members, staff and their families, we have decided to temporarily suspend services at all FFC locations beginning Monday, March 16, 2020 at midnight. At this time, none of our staff have tested positive for COVID-19.

Given that this situation is complex and evolving, it is our intention to re-engage services at the clubs as soon as we can. Please expect the facilities and services to be unavailable indefinitely until the government has provided permission to re-open. We will be monitoring this ever evolving landscape so that we can be prepared to reopen our clubs once it is appropriate to do so.

During this time period above, while all services are temporarily suspended, we will continue to perform deep cleaning and preparing the clubs for re-opening. FFC staff will continue to be paid during the above stated time period, inclusive of service providers. All member services with expirations, FFC Bucks (including the Earn Your Enrollment Fee back program), and sessions will be extended accordingly.

Effective immediately, we will no longer be placing memberships on hold/freeze. All lost time during the FFC temporary shutdown will be credited to your membership account when the clubs reopen.

Free 30 Day Access To FFC On Demand:

On a positive note: as fate would have it, we created FFC On Demand at the end of 2019. All members will have complimentary access to this platform (available both online and through the app), effective immediately, during this temporary shutdown period. FFC On Demand hosts a robust offer of group fitness classes featuring your favorite FFC instructors, workouts featuring your favorite FFC trainers, nutrition tips, tricks and meal plans, unlimited messaging with a nutrition specialist, and lifestyle modification including stress release and mindfulness practices.

Please check your email for a special Free 30 Day Access To FFC On Demand available to all dues-paying members. If you didn't receive the email, please contact us at ffc.com/contact-us.

On behalf of all the FFC staff, I am incredibly appreciative of your membership and our Chicagoland-based FFC community. We will continue to provide updates as the situation changes via email and the ffc.com/prevent link. We are deeply grateful for your loyalty, patience and understanding during this time.

In health,

FFC is committed to the health and safety of our members and staff. As flu season continues into March and the CDC provides more information about COVID-19, we want to make you aware of the actions we are taking at the clubs to prevent the spread of disease and how you can help.

Here’s what FFC is doing to prevent the spread of disease:

  • In addition to stocking up on disinfecting gym wipes, we have ramped up our cleaning routines. We are doubling our efforts with our high touch-point areas, from dumbbells and locker handles to doors and drinking fountains.
  • We are encouraging our members to be more attentive to the courtesy of wiping down equipment with disinfecting gym wipes, an act that is now a precautionary measure to minimize bacteria on the non-porous, hard surfaces.

Additional FFC Cleaning & Safety Efforts:

  • From Saturday, March 14 – Friday, March 20, all 11 of our club locations will go through a proactive, overnight deep cleaning process. This is being facilitated through an outside, 3rd party professional cleaning vendor, using a using a hospital grade disinfectant recommended by the CDC. Operating hours will not be affected.
  • Cleaning sweeps for high touch areas of the clubs are happening at least once an hour at all clubs, this includes surfaces like door handles, hand railings, drinking fountains, keypads, and dumbbells to mention a few.
  • We have secured large quantities of disinfecting wipes and quaternary cleaning supplies to prevent supply chain interruption.
  • As a reminder, several weeks ago we implemented hands-free check in at all club locations.
  • The FFC leadership team, which includes every general manager and members of our corporate staff, is meeting daily to discuss and implement additional efforts to keep everyone safe and healthy.

While you are at FFC, here are some actions you can take to prevent the spread of disease:

  • Use the disinfecting gym wipes on all equipment surfaces, please don’t use your towels. We ask you to use the wipes generously and diligently, and these can be used to disinfect your hands as well!
  • Notify club staff of any empty disinfecting gym wipe dispensers and soap dispensers.
  • We are in the process of adding the disinfecting gym wipes to even more areas of club, including the locker rooms, we encourage you to use them generously and diligently.
  • Consider working out at off-peak times when possible. Those times are between 9 AM – 11 AM, 1 PM – 4 PM, and after 8 PM during the week, and after 2 PM on the weekends.
  • Please stay home if you are sick.
  • Consider placing a towel between you and the equipment you are using in the club.
  • Consider practicing social distancing, leaving 3 – 5 feet between you and another person, when using cardio equipment, on the fitness floor, and while in group fitness classes.

Additionally, the CDC lists these everyday actions to follow to remain healthy:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Avoid social physical contact, like handshakes and hugs
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Stay home from work, school and all activities when you are sick, except to get medical care
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects daily using a regular household detergent and water

For more information, please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Our goal is to ensure members and employees alike remain confident in our clubs during these challenging circumstances. Club cleanliness is top-of-mind at all times. Please know that everyone’s health is a priority in everything that we do, as Safety is one of FFC’s Core Values!

We are confident that our clubs are safe and will continue to operate as normal.
