April’s Message from General Manager Kelly Malohn March 29, 2012
Have you been coming to the club for weeks, months or maybe even years but not seeing results? You’re not alone, and I know it’s frustrating. But, there is a solution! The best part of it is that since you have already committed the time, you’ve already won half of the battle.
Now for the other half of the battle.
If you are not getting the results you are looking for, there are a few possible reasons:
1. You are not exercising right.
2. You are not eating right.
3. A combination of 1 and 2.
What does it mean to “exercise right”? It means doing the right type of exercise at the right intensity, frequency, and duration to get the results that you are looking for. Here are some tips:
• Cardio – you MUST increase your heart rate for a set period of time and make your muscles work. Simply being on the treadmill, walking casually, is not enough. You have to push your body outside of your comfort zone in order to make it respond.
• Strength – you MUST be tired when you complete a set of strength training exercises. If you are not, there will be no change. You will not get stronger or more toned. Increase the weight, or the number of reps, or maybe both, to make a change.
What does it mean to “eat right”? Most are more familiar with this, and generally, it’s easier said than, done, but I’ll say it again:
• Eating right means a diet full of fruits, veggies, lean proteins, whole grains and plenty of water. Sweets, sugars, high fat foods and alcohol should be consumed in moderation.
• If you think you already are eating well, but still not getting results, you may need to start tracking your diet to find out what is really happening. Often times we need help with portion sizes or we are underestimating the sugar and/or calorie content of certain foods.
Lastly, you may need to tweak both diet and exercise. It may be just a couple of small changes such as replacing red meat with fish and low-fat chicken plus increasing your pace on the treadmill, or you may need to make more substantial adjustments.
I’m not promising that it will be easy. It may be easier than you think once you’re doing the right things – or it may require some tough changes. The bottom line is, if what you’re doing is not working, change it. If you need help figuring out what to change, I will be happy to give you some suggestions or set up an appointment for a fitness assessment with one of our experienced personal trainers. THERE IS A SOLUTION! Get the RESULTS you want – you will feel great!
