Jackson Boulevard bridge to close tonight March 15, 2010

“Metra is advising customers who use Chicago Union Station that the Jackson Boulevard bridge will be closed to pedestrians beginning this evening at 8 p.m. through 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

During this time Union Station users must take either Adams or Van Buren streets to cross the Chicago River.

The closing is necessary to complete balancing of the bridge, which has been closed to vehicles for several months for repairs.

Additional bridge closings are expected over the next few weeks, Metra said.

The Chicago Department of Transportation is repairing the bridge as well as rebuilding the Jackson Boulevard viaduct between Canal Street and the river. The viaduct spans UnionStation’s south passenger platforms and 16 tracks.

The work, which started last June, includes building new piers, superstructure, roadway and sidewalk.”
