HOW-TO HACK: The Secret to Improving Your Workouts

Want to improve your race time, distance, lifting, or range of motion?  What’s keeping you from getting to the next level in your workouts?  While much of your exercise routine and athletic achievements can be accomplished with a positive attitude and a good support system, your muscles still need to perform the work.  Without proper care and maintenance, like a good car, your body can breakdown without notice and without access to “spare parts”.

Heavily exercised muscles may lose their capacity to relax, causing chronically tight, or “hypertonic” muscles, and loss of flexibility. Lack of flexibility is often linked to muscle soreness, and can predispose a person to injuries, especially muscle pulls and tears.  Blood flow through tight muscles is poor or “ischemia”, which also causes pain.

May we suggest peppering therapeutic massage into your workout schedule to keep your body performing as it should and to avoid poor form, tight muscles, and injury?   Massage helps the body recover from the stresses of strenuous exercise, and facilitates the rebuilding phase of conditioning. “Pretty soon now you’re gonna get older

This month’s blog-post title is borrowed, of course, from the inimitable David Bowie and his song of the same name. The title holds a few different meanings for me at present. Most time-sensitive, and perhaps obvious to some, is the about-to-close David Bowie Is exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art here in Chicago. It’s a sight to see whether you’re a Bowie fan or not. You’ll get a glimpse of the enigma that is his creative process and his art. You’ll see Bowie’s evolution from young musician, to androgenous performer, to legendary artist. There are a few walk-up tickets still available through Sunday, Jan. 4. It’s ridiculously cool and you shouldn’t miss it! The second meaning is that when I think of the repetition of these lyrics, it reminds me of a person trying to articulate words anywhere outdoors in Chicago’s arctic winter temps. Being that we’ve entered January in the midwest, I think you can expect to experience this shiver-speak once, or a hundred times, in the next few months. S-s-s-sorry, but it’s true.

The last reason, though, to me, is the most important, and incidentally with the most literal meaning: the root of the word:  Change. (Noun).  \ˈchānj\ to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., (of something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone.

How does this word resonate with you? What feelings does it evoke? Fear? Excitement?  Anxiety? In January, as many are proclaiming (or at least thinking about) their New Year’s Resolutions, changes are imminent. It’s time to let go of old patterns and habits, and adopt a new routine which will help you keep on track with your goals. If this feels scary to you, I can certainly relate, but if the goals are yours, then no one can judge how quickly or by which method you choose to approach them.

Fear not! We’ll be right there with you, letting go of unsuccessful methods, moving on from toxic people, putting down that chocolate caramel cookie and running that extra mile. The exercise of making changes in your life shouldn’t be isolated to January, though. Seasonally, take the time to evaluate, assess, purge and change course as needed. Here are some seeds of thought, in case you’re coming up short on what things to evaluate to determine whether or not a change is needed:

Your Crew. Are you friends “A” players? What value or joy do they bring to your life? If your friends are a time or energy suck, maybe the hour has arrived to cut the cord. Friends should bring laughter and support to your life, not drama and stress. So go ahead, unfriend or unfollow them on Facebook and Twitter, and say “no” to the next obligatory lunch date. It’s OK to move on from people that don’t lift you up as a person.  B-b-b-b-bye.

Your home environment. Your home should be a sanctuary for you to relax and clear your mind in, and a space for you to heal your soul. Yadda Yadda Yadda, I know. At a minimum, you should be able to carve out a corner at your place to which you can retreat. If you don’t already have this space, it’s time to make room. Start by donating electronics, clothes, toys and furnishings that are creating clutter and get little use. Someone else will benefit from your kindness, and you might be surprised at what an impact such a simple act can have on your sanity. Next, shred all that nasty paperwork you don’t need and update your accounts to paperless. Unsubscribe to magazines and newsletters you don’t read anyway. Follow that by rearranging a nice chair, or some pillows, so that you have a comfy place to think, read, listen to music or doodle. Ahhhhhhh.

The time you spend free of media. Remember the pre-tech 90’s? That is, before cell phones, iPads, Droids, iPods, even email. You didn’t take selfies with duck lips at the bar and post them while your “besties” did the same. You didn’t read your news feed while waiting for the El. You definitely didn’t play Candy Crush while sitting in the Loo. You talked. You actually talked to people. You looked them in the eye. You held a door open, and someone held one open for you.  You were perfect, everyone knew it, and it wasn’t because of your latest Instagram or Facebook status. Try it again sometime. I think you’ll like it.

The work you do. Maybe you have a job. Perhaps a vocation. Or is yours a career? A calling?  No? …it’s an occupation? Believe it or not, these different labels can be quite indicative of how you feel about what you do during the working hours. Regardless of what you call it, it’s the way you’re bound to spend at least ⅓ of your day, so it’s probably good to make sure it counts. It’s never too late to be what you want to be when you grow up. Figure out what it is you want to do. Make a plan. Then work on it.  Every. Single. Day. No, it’s not original, but it fits, so there.

Bundle up, embrace the change, and turn and face the strange. Happy New Year to All. See you at the Spa!

‘Tis a Gift to be Simple

Well folks, there’s no more denying that the holiday season has arrived. That’s right, even though you didn’t shed those five pounds before T-day so you could stuff your face, you are still able run outside in a t-shirt on some days, and you swear the year has just flown by “way too fast”,  They’re Heeeerrrre….  

It’s time to hurry up and start thinking about those holiday gifts!  What Lego will you get little Bobby? How on Earth will you choose the best American Girl Doll for Emily? Will Aunt Alice appreciate her perennial fuzzy-slipper gift? Will you be able to resist settling on a Starbucks gift card for your office Secret Santa exchange? Will these kids ever stop singing “Let it Go?!”

Last night while browsing through my email (which was stuffed with 24-Hour-Only flash sales, “Limited Time Only!” proclamations, Free Shipping deals and Last-Chance-to-Save offers), I started my holiday gift list. My mind began to drift, thinking about fun holiday get-togethers from years past, great Christmas Eve dinners with extended family, and all the post-meal games of “Celebrity” where my sister and I high-fived until our palms were sore.

I had tripped down into the holiday-memory rabbit hole, and 30 minutes later I still didn’t have a single gift idea written down. It was time to climb my way back to the gift list. I started trying to recall presents I had received from others, thinking that might give me some inspiration. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I could not remember very many store-bought gifts at all, let alone who had given them to me. I guess that’s not so surprising. “I’m so glad Grandma gave me that oversized cable-knit sweater!” and “This hand lotion/shower gel caddy really touched my heart!”  are indeed phrases that never passed through these lips. I really couldn’t even recall receiving the bigger gifts like computers, phones or games. Those material things seem to have gotten lost in the shuffle of things I just sorta have, not things that I received as gifts. Back to the task at hand.

Must. Get. Shopping. List. Done.

Then something happened. My body started getting warm. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. I was headed back down the rabbit hole, but this time I was ready to free fall. I thought of some of the most wonderful gifts that I had ever gotten and the memories filled my spirit. For a little while I was blissful living in the past. What gifts might make a person feel so complete and happy? You might be surprised:

A 24-cassette holder filled with mixed tapes.  Those of you that have no idea what cassette holders or mixed tapes are might just want to skip this one. In 1993, before I embarked on a three month-long journey across the country, my dear friend stayed up for two days straight making me music tapes to accompany me on my trip. She wrote notes inside of them and had recorded music that corresponded to different regions and sights in the U.S. Sometimes she also recorded her voice with funny vignettes. I can’t play them anymore, but I still have that box of tapes and I will never let it go.

A scrapbook album. A few years ago, my sister gave me a “Sisters” album. She dug through old pictures at my parents’ house, made copies of them, and dotted the album with little snippets about us, funny moments we had shared and special memories. She also left space for me to write notes in the book. Sometimes when Sissy comes to visit, we flip through the book together side-by-side on the sofa.

A jar filled with memories. Before her cross-country move many years ago, a friend handed me a gift and told me not to open it until after she left.  We had become very close and she knew I was going to miss her terribly. The next day, I opened the gift. It was a ceramic jar that said “Memories” on it and inside were about 60 little paper notes with just a sentence or two about something we had done together. I laughed and cried so hard, and every now and again I still peek inside the jar when I need a pick-me-up.

A painting with my favorite poem written on the back.  My best friend is a brilliant artist. It seems she was born with a paintbrush in one hand and a wad of clay in the other.  When we graduated from college, she painted me her interpretation of my favorite poem, and hand wrote that poem on the back of the canvas in calligraphy. I had the painting framed years later when I could afford it, and it hangs on my wall next to my bookshelf. It is always in plain view, and when I see it I am reminded of our unwavering, 40-year friendship.

These are just of the few of the personal, lovely and meaningful gifts my loved ones have given me over the years. While mixed tapes might be off the docket for you, maybe you’ll consider making something special for at least one or two people on your holiday roster. If they’re like me, it’ll be on the short list of gifts they actually hold on to both with their hands and their hearts.

I think I’m finally ready to start that list now…

On Being Grateful

Before long, we’ll find ourselves scurrying around the grocery aisles fighting for the last cans of cranberry sauce and picking through sad heaps of herbs and spices for homemade stuffing. Then, of course, there’s the inevitable waiting “forever” on line while flipping through OK! Magazine for the 30 minutes it takes to get up to the clerk because “some lady” took “Extreme Couponing” to a whole. ‘nother. level.

But hold on for just one second. Before the complaining begins and the stress of hosting the in-laws takes over, maybe just take a short pause to remember what you’re thankful for.

It can be tough to do, yes. Too often, we’re so caught up in the grind of our day-to-day, and the annoyance that is our job, our spouse, the wind, etc, that it’s hard to find gratitude for anything at all. Need some help? Breathe in, and picture the things that enrich your life. If you’re still coming up short, here are a few of the random things I am grateful for. Maybe one or two might resonate for you:

Mom & Dad, Sister & Brother. Yeah, I know it seems like the obvious choice. But how often do we take family for granted? I’ve always been very close with my zany and wonderful parents and siblings and as an adult, like many, I now appreciate them even more. Last year when my mom was diagnosed with Leukemia (she was victorious!), the hugs got a little tighter, the calls more frequent, and the laughter much, much louder and from a deeper place. We relish our time together and I can’t wait to spend Thanksgiving with them.

Wine. OK, it’s out there. I like my wine. Like a trusted friend, my Cabernet (or maybe a Meritage tonight?) is there for me in good times and in marginal times. She (yes my wine is a girl) warms my soul, enhances my dreams, and for a fair price, she’ll takes my cares away. We’re close, me and my wine, but don’t worry, we’re not so close that I’ll be writing my next blog from Shady Wines – Home For Winos. 😉

My Dog. Suzy (“The Noodle)” has blessed our lives in so many ways since the day we took her home from the shelter 3 years ago. Every day she makes me laugh with just a little look or turn of her head to the sound of the word “treat” and the way she flutters her paws in synch when I dare to stop petting her. She’s got living down-pat; eating, sleeping, running, getting massaged. The only job she has is as my canine alarm-clock and she never fails to deliver.

My Legs. Maybe it sounds weird to you, but I’m pretty thankful to have these two imperfect limbs that walk and run me all around this city, through airports, to friends’ outings, to the beach, and on my many travels. If you’ve ever had a leg or foot injury, or perhaps something even more debilitating, you know what I mean about the freedom of doing it on your own without any devices.

My iPod. When I was little, my Dad would play Peter Tosh, Stevie Wonder, or The Who at an alarmingly loud volume for a Sunday morning. Just to get us out of bed. By the time I turned 10, I had adopted his habit (payback’s are a you-know-what), and not only was I playing several instruments, but learned how to get my music volume up to an 11! Rock n Roll, Jazz, Blues, Reggae, Indie, Classical, any genre save Country (sorry folks), and I’m captivated by the sounds and nuances of the notes and how they band together to form a tune. Nowadays If I leave the house forgetting my iPod and/or headphones, a rush of anxiety spills over me. How will I get through this work (interchangeable with: run/flight/ride/project/cooking/nap, etc)? Can’t function without the iPod. No sir.

This list not relevant to you? Not surprising….it’s mine! Why not go and make your own list, even if you don’t actually write it down. Taking the time for this exercise in gratitude may be the stress-break you need to see just how much good there is in the world.

I gave up a long time ago trying to figure out why football was named as such when hardly anyone’s feet ever intentionally touch the ball, but that’s a different blog post.

Disclaimer: Now would be a good time to bow out of this if you just can’t survive without the NFL!

Strange as it may seem, there are actual, real people who couldn’t care less about watching a football game on a Sunday. Or on any day for that matter. For a moment let’s pretend that I’m one of those people, or that you’re one of those people, or perhaps you’re one of those people who knows other people who would rather be doing just about anything else but watch the “big game.” What on Earth would we do with our four hours if not plant ourselves on the sofa yelling “Did we forget how to tackle?” or “Come on Cutler!” or “Where’s the Defense?!” or “This is an embarrassment!!”

Just for good measure (not that you’d ever let it slip amongst a herd of Bears fans) here’s a few ideas:

Get your grocery shopping on. Once game-time begins, your favorite Mariano’s store may have been wiped clean of Doritos and PBR, but the aisles will be devoid of people. So grab a glass of wine and enjoy a lineless, hassle free dance around the produce or International Foods sections. If the weather’s right, skip the store and go to Logan Square Farmers Market.

Go to a movie. Grab a friend, or better yet go solo. Indulging in a movie sans company elicits a feeling of liberation hard to describe: No one talking to you, asking you to explain the plot or hogging your popcorn.  This fall, check out one of these sure-fire Oscar contenders:  Gone Girl, Wild, Birdman, Boyhood and Skeleton Twins.

One word: Oktoberfest. The good news is that while there’s only one word to describe it, there will be numerous Oktoberfest events in Chicagoland. Have a pint just for the ale of it. There’s something for all palettes:  pumpkin, harvest, red or brown ales are very popular this time of year. How about a toast with a Goose Island Harvest Ale?

Have a Spa Day.  Right, so I’m biased here, but what better time to escape for a great, warm, therapeutic spa treatment than a cool, late afternoon in October? Go to the Beach. There won’t be any volleyball or eye-candy in bathing suits, and you may need a jacket, but the fall is an amazing time to hit the beach. Head there with a chair, a book and a hot chocolate. Even better, head to Montrose Dog Beach and watch the canines frolic!

Get outta Dodge. There are some truly idyllic settings that feel very un-city like that are just a hop, skip, and a short drive or train ride away. Take a run, a brisk walk or do some cycling at one of these sweet spots:  The Illinois Prairie Path, The Desplaines River Trail or the Busse Woods Trail.

Brunch it is.  Enjoy Brunch on your own or with other football-indifferent. Try one of these awesome spots:  Lula Cafe in Logan Square, Bite Café or Nana Organic, and avoid the waits on days when the game is on!

Help others. How about spending a few hours volunteering at a shelter, community garden, nursing home, or even doing a project for an aging parent or grandparent? These days it’s easy to whittle away hours doing things like posting on Facebook and Instagram, and watching re-runs of HIMYM, yet few people reach out to lend a hand to their neighbors. Find opportunities to do just that at: http://www.chicagocares.org/.

Be a tourist for a day. Have you been to the Bean lately? Did you know about the awesome Magritte exhibit at the Art Institute? When was the last time you went kayaking on the Chicago River? There are zillions of things to do in this awesome city that don’t involve a couch or a remote. Get out there and enjoy!

My Journey to 13.1

During a recent trip to Puerto Rico for my cousin’s wedding, I rolled my ankle, spraining it badly enough to keep me from dancing the Salsa and Merengue. Now, I’ve sprained an ankle before, once on a rigorous rock climb in New Hampshire, and another time while simply taking a downhill climb of a staircase at my last job.  Not adventurous, but it got the job done. This time, however, was especially deflating. It happened on my last long training run before for my first-ever half marathon, which was meant to be run in Massachusetts just nine days later. While still in the Caribbean, I followed the proper protocol for injury with inflammation, and took liberties with a couple of more enjoyable steps…..Rest, Ice, Swim in the Ocean, Compression, Elevation, Pina Colada. You get the idea. The salty air, warm ocean currents and rum drinks made up for my pain and frustration for a few days and, of course, my background as a massage therapist came in handy.

It wasn’t until nearly a week later when I returned to Chicago and visited the Ankle and Foot specialist, that the real pain set in and I received the news that I had sprained two ligaments and was most certainly not going to be running 13.1 miles that Sunday. I felt a pinch in my soul trump the pain in my ankle.  After a couple of years of turmoil, I’d finally gotten myself back to a place where I could train consistently, and had done so for several months.  Forgetting about my injury for the time it took to put that beast of a soft cast on, I thought about my journey leading up to training for this race.  The previous four years had been full of colossal life events, some exciting, some downright devastating:  Making the move from Pennsylvania to Chicago, getting engaged, getting married, honeymooning in Africa, the passing of my husband’s beloved mother, the nervous breakdown of someone very close to me, my Mom’s war with (and triumph over) Acute Myeloid Leukemia, among of host of other hurdles.  As a matter of perspective, this seemed small, yet I wasn’t ready to release the idea that all my training was for naught. I needed that run to make up for all that had gone wrong in just the last year alone.  This run was meant to be my victory lap over my tribulations! They finished my casting and I left the office saddened, disappointed and bewildered.

I spent the next few days complaining and whining to anyone who would listen, telling and retelling the story of how “my race” would not be happening and how crushing that was.  I tried to make light of it, but I was still bugged. On top of my own injury, my husband, who was also training, was suffering from Achilles pain and decided the run would not happen for him either.  Still, we elected to keep our plans to travel to Boston to watch my sister-in-law complete the run that we had all planned together.  We flew to Logan and I silently brooded in my uncomfortable Southwest seat.  Our flight was delayed and we didn’t land until almost four hours behind schedule. Ugh. Roadblocks.

Saturday the mood lightened with the presence of my curiously funny and sweet 3-year-old niece, and then dinner and drinks with an old friend, but it wasn’t until the next morning that the self-pity party disbanded.  Sunday was a beautiful New England early summer day. I was with my family. The coffee was perfectly brewed. When we got to the site, I could feel the race-day energy all around me.  In a flash, I had my moment of clarity. It wasn’t about running a half marathon. It was about the countless hours of early-morning, lunchtime and evening training runs, the cross-training, the sweating it out, and the crying it out, and now it was about supporting the several thousand others who had done the same.  I had run more than 350 miles during the few months leading up to the Newburyport Half Marathon, so what did it matter that I couldn’t run on that day? I was suddenly grateful and elated that I was able to be there, healthy and happy, to watch many others breeze through and struggle alike, with every mile,

During my recovery time, I improved my swimming and cycling skills, socialized more with friends, and dusted off and read the books that had fallen behind the pack because of my training. There was always a tiny inner voice whispering to me that if I didn’t recover faster, it would take forever to get back at it, but I quieted it as best I could, and remained patient. It took me seven weeks to run my first miles after my Isla Verde ankle sprain. I only completed two miles that first day, but over the course of several days I found my stamina and strength. That first week I ran what amounted to 13.1 miles (as accurately as my GPS would allow). My own intentional half marathon. There was no medal. No finish line. There was, however, the satisfaction of having set out on a journey, arriving at a destination, taking a deep breath, and continuing on to find new pathways and purpose.  Satisfying indeed.

When To Get A Sports Massage 

People often ask about the differences between various massage modalities so that they may choose the service that best suits their immediate need.  One of the most common questions is “what is the difference between a sports massage and a deep tissue massage?”  We figured we’d help remove the guesswork for you when deciding.

Top 3 reasons to get a sports massage:

  1. You have a chronic pain from a specific athletic activity – Whether you’re a swimmer, cyclist, runner or lifter, over time and with age, pain from over/mis-use of muscles can result in muscle scar tissue that impedes mobility and flexibility.  Sports massage on specific targeted muscle groups will help to break up adhesions caused by repetitive use. Injury Recovery Made Simple

Spa_Recovery_bannerExercise is great medicine, and it can and will improve your life and general health. It can also put the body through stress, which can lead to injury, especially with poor form or posture. While some injuries may require medical attention, most minor injuries will heal by simply applying the R.I.C.E. method: REST, ICE, COMPRESSION, ELEVATION. (Add PROTECT to this list if the injury is in a joint area such as ankle, wrist, or knee). If pain and swelling persist, always consult with your doctor.

  • REST: Give your injured tissues time to heal. Modify your exercise routine to allow your injuries to right themselves.
  • ICE: Use ice to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain. To optimize results, apply an ice pack for 10 to 15 minutes after an injury. Repeat each hour for the first four hours, then four times a day for the next two to three days.
  • COMPRESSION: Mild to moderate pressure can also help reduce swelling and inflammation. Try an ACE bandage or the like.
  • ELEVATION: Whenever possible, keep injured limbs elevated to keep fluid draining away from the damaged tissue. This will also assist in reduction of pain, inflammation and swelling.

A note on Ice vs Heat: You will want to use ice on muscle sprains, strains, and tendonitis, but avoid using ice on muscle spasms (in the muscle belly) as it can cause further pain. Once there is no longer inflammation present, you may want to use a nice warm, moist heat pack to calm and relieve overworked, angry muscles. Electronic heating pads are not preferred.

Massage therapy is a good way to combat muscle soreness and help prevent and recover from injury, as long as inflammation or redness is not present. In between regular massages and your workout routine, make sure you employ proper stretching techniques to stave off injury and shorten recovery times.
