Congratulations to Ryan Oswald, FFC Old Town’s New General Manager!

Welcome New Staff

Western South Dakota is among the most remote places in the United States, so just the fact that I am from there should be testament enough to who I am. In case there are any doubters, I wanted to take a moment to let you know a little bit about me as I step into the General Manager role at FFC Old Town. I have been with FFC since 2007, starting as a personal trainer at the Halsted location and working my way up to Fitness Director in 2013. I have worked with a lot of great people over the years, and gained a lot of knowledge of the fitness industry. Prior to me joining FFC, I lived in the UK, where I studied exercise physiology.

I have always enjoyed fitness so it was natural to undertake it in college. I have played soccer my whole life, including captaining my collegiate team and some semi-pro. I love all sports, and now I have transitioned into the easier joint activity of cross country skiing.

I look forward to meeting all of our members, and helping to make sure they have the best experience of any health club in Chicago. I wish everyone a happy holiday season, filled with intense workouts at FFC Old Town powered by Myzone! Thank you!

Truly remarkable people cross our paths very few times in our lives, so when they do, we must take notice.  Tom Petraitis is one of those people, and over the years has solidified himself as the “rock” of our climbing program even more than our wall.

However, as unbelievable as he is, increased competition for climbing in the city has forced us to make the difficult decision to permanently close THE LEDGE – OLD TOWN. The final date for climbing here will be December 20, after which, we will be moving in a new direction with the space.

Tom will continue to carry the climbing torch onto a new horizon, our Park Ridge location hopefully opening by the end of the year. He will be managing the beautiful new version of THE LEDGE – PARK RIDGE Climbing Wall there. Tom was heavily involved in the design of this new wall, and we know it will be another stunning climbing destination within FFC. As the general manager of FFC Old Town, I’d like to personally thank Tom and all of his LEDGE staff, for contributing so much to the success of FFC Old Town over the years.  In addition, I want you all to know that your dedication, passion, and hard work have been the bedrock of the wall and without you, it would not have enjoyed the success it did. We wish you nothing but the best in continuing the challenge of building a new climbing community in Park Ridge, and truly thank you for your service here.

Old Town Holiday Charity Drive – 11/29 – 12/20

FFC Old Town will be participating in this year’s Old Town Holiday Charity Drive. From 11/29 – 12/20, FFC Old Town will be one of the 15 designated drop off locations in Old Town where you can bring nonperishable food items, new or gently-worn winter clothing, and household supplies/toiletries to support Deborah’s Place and Chicago House.

By bringing in items for the charity drive, you can receive a 3-day guest pass for a friend (if you are already a member) or yourself, if you are not yet a member of our FFC family! Tis the season of giving, so we are DELIGHTED to be a part of it! Visit the membership department for more details.

Men’s “Movember” Cancer Awareness Month at FFC Old Town

As we have in past years, we again celebrate this November with our support of those fighting and involved with the fight against cancer as well as honoring our “Movember Mustache Monday”, taking place on November 14.  We will have mustaches available at the front desk to wear during your workout to show your support! Turn it in and you will receive a complimentary guest pass added to your account to bring a friend to FFC Old Town for a workout!

November is a special month for me, as many of you know, I lost my fiance Marshall Klemmt to complications with his testicular cancer in April of 2000. November 11, he would have been 40. He was one of the most amazing individuals I ever had the honor of having in my life, so while I move forward, I never forget and always try to honor him, as so many others are affected by this horribly devastating disease. Happy Birthday Marshall! In your honor, and those loved ones also lost, we will continue this fight for so many that need us. Phillip Bridges is a new personal trainer at FFC Old Town. He initially became a trainer because of his passion for movement, and demonstrates his passion each day in how he trains those he trains. His training philosophy is based on what he learned when working in the strength and conditioning department at the University of Dayton. The exercises and practices he used with NCAA Division I collegiate athletes are the same techniques he uses with his clients and athletes to help them reach their goals. Ultimately, Phillip works to improve and change people’s lives at FFC through movement and nutrition coaching.

Brian is our newest trainer here at FFC Old Town. He recently finished the ACE FFC personal training certification program and also took part in the USA Weightlifting Sports Conditioning certification course. He has been involved in sports and fitness since he was young and has a passion for exercise and healthy living. His family is from Chicago, born on the northwest side of the city. Brian stayed active in after school activities and enjoyed the outdoors. He is excited to share his enjoyment of fitness with his coworkers and members alike!

6-WEEK GROUP CLIMBING CLASSES

Enrollment for THELEDGE 6-Week Adult Classes is now open at the club level! The 6-week session begins Tuesday, September 6. Members and non-members alike can enroll in classes at the Old Town FFC front desk or by calling the gym at 312-640-1235. Level 1 (beginner) classes will meet on Tuesdays (7:00 PM), Thursdays (7:00 PM), Saturdays (Noon) and Sundays (Noon). Enrollment includes attendance in all meetings! Level 2, 3 and 4 classes are posted at the Old Town climbing page at http://ffc.com/oldtown/climbing-wall/#toggle-id-6.

The 6-week program is $125 for members, $175 for non-members. Any FFC member who signs up with a friend for Level 1 gets a $25 discount, and so does the friend (even if the friend is a non-member)!

PRIVATE BOULDERING LESSON PACKAGES

If your schedule requires some flexibility, private lessons with a top notch instructor are a great alternative to group climbing classes. Six one-hour lessons, scheduled at times that work for you, are $198.

KIDS CLIMBING CAMPS  

Kids Climbing Camps are a year-round feature of Old Town’s THELEDGE climbing school for kids ages 4 to 13. Classes run most weekday afternoons from 4:00-5:30 PM and weekend mornings from 10:00-11:30 AM.  Instructors lead kids through bouldering, rope climbing and even slacklining challenges during these 90-minute sessions. Once-a-week enrollment for 10 weeks is $150, twice-a-week is $200. Once every other week for 20 weeks is $200. Trial Visits ($35) are offered as a way to be sure your kid likes climbing before committing to an enrollment, and the fee can be applied toward immediate enrollment the program. There are no “set” session start dates; enrollment is always “open” and may begin whenever it is convenient to you. Note: some classes may not be open for enrollment; so please email the climbing wall manager, Tom Petraitis, at tpetraitis@ffc.com to request a spot.

August Events at THELEDGE Climbing Wall at FFC Old Town

In addition to our special programming below, we are excited to announce that as a courtesy to our members, we are waiving the climbing wall shoe rental fee for the month of August. Cross that item off your bucket list and give THELEDGE a try!

Climbing for the Curious and the Clueless at THELEDGE

Curious? Clueless? Maybe you’re both. And on top of that you don’t want to get hurt. Got it! Learning to climb and proper safety protocol is as easy as walking back to the climbing wall and introducing yourself to an instructor. Old Town’s THELEDGE climbing instructors are available Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 7:00 PM to assist you into harnesses, tie you into a rope so you are totally safe and to belay you to the top of the climbing wall! No knowledge required! Just come, say hi and give it a try! Plus, during the month of August, we are including free climbing shoe rental to members bold enough to give it a try!

Parents wondering what to do this year for their kids birthday parties need look no further than FFC Old Town! The all-in-one birthday package includes 90 minutes of certified instructor supervised climbing fun, and a 30-minute pizza party with refreshments. The cost is $300 for up to 10 children – and for each additional child beyond that it is only $20. Both parents of the birthday child and party guests are invited to join in the fun at no charge too!

We’re excited to announce the addition of Andrew Lee to the FFC Old Town team! Andrew joins us as our new fitness specialist and trainer with a degree in exercise science, concentrating in health and wellness.

He is from Fort Wayne, IN and attended High Point University in High Point, NC. He also played travel hockey growing up and throughout high school and college.

He is going to be a FANTASTIC addition to FFC Old Town!

What does membership at FFC mean to you?
It means having a commitment to healthy living. When I was stressed wth work, it meant a healthy way to de-stress and feel re-energized. As a new mom, the membership means getting back in shape and loving my body and how I feel again, as well as talking and laughing with people after a day of baby talk and diapers! The staff and trainers at FFC (like Lisa, Adilson, and Natasha the Great) help make it hands down the best gym I have ever been a member of!

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to FFC Old Town’s newest Pilates Instructor – Anne Gemkow!

Anne grew up in Chicago where she was classically trained as a ballerina. She danced with Ballet Chicago and then moved to New York to dance. She started doing Pilates as a dancer and fell in love with it. After leaving NYC for warmer weather, I moved around a lot between California and Hawaii. I settled down in San Diego and started teaching Pilates full-time. I’m also an accomplished marathon runner. I have completed over 100 full marathons. I also enjoy surfing, snowboarding, hiking, and biking!

Try our small group training at FFC Old Town!!

This is an intense workout in our newly revamped studio, designed to push the limits of fitness. We utilize progressive resistance (think results) in a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) modality to drive results of those with at least an “average” level of fitness. This is all done in a fun, group-oriented environment.  This is THE class for those wanting to get beach ready as quickly as possible! Classes are filling up fast, don’t wait to sign up!
