April’s Message from General Manager John O’Connor March 29, 2012
Instant Rebate; Instant Classic; Instant Iced Tea; Immediate Feedback; Immediate Effect; Shows on Demand (okay that’s a reach but you get my point). Immediate Results? Not so fast on this one.
We live in a world of now. I personally blame the Kardashians, but some would say that’s just envy rearing its green head. My Grandma Dorothy used to preach to me growing up to “Beware that which seems too good to be true . . . ‘cause it is.” Immediate results are to fitness as Jell-O is to the world of nutrition – empty calories at best. Gradual weight loss has always proven both anecdotally and scientifically to be the best way to achieve long lasting results. The body’s system, both in appearance, and molecularly, needs to have the opportunity to adjust to changes. Those changes made too fast become too difficult for our systems to handle and we overload them with conflicting signals and pretty soon they will shut down.
The old fable of the Tortoise and the Hare never rang truer than it does when trying to achieve a fitness goal. My grandmother also used to tell me to “Slow down the process and enjoy the journey more.” My point is that in this day in age we have forgotten that the journey is a very rewarding part of achieving the desired result. Immediate results can lead to a false sense of accomplishment.
Last month would have been Grandma Dorothy’s’ 100th birthday. Join me as I pay homage to this wise renaissance woman and heed some of her advice. Take your time, smell those roses and let the journey be your reward.
